Although the College of Arts + Sciences can trace its history back to the very founding of Indiana University, it was not until 1870 that it was formally established as its own administrative body.
In 1894 it became necessary for the then-Department of Liberal Arts to have a dean. Today the Executive Dean of the College of Arts + Sciences oversees 225+ academic programs across 3 schools, and 120+ departments, centers, and institutes.
The timeline below traces all of the deans of the College of Arts + Sciences from the very first dean, Horace A. Hoffman, to Larry D. Singell.
