Organizations focused on advancing gay rights formed at IU by 1970. That year, IU Bloomington students founded the Bloomington Gay Liberation Front to “help their gay brothers and sisters accept and be proud of their gayness so they won’t hide in a false front defined by society but will be themselves 24 hours a day.”
This organization evolved over the years and changed names to the Bloomington Gay Alliance and the Bloomington Gay and Lesbian Alliance.
This timeline traces the evolution of LGBTQ+ organizations at IU Bloomington and provides context to developments at IU by highlighting important national events that affected gay rights.
