<p>A major grant from the US Public Health Service of $58,812 is awarded for An Intervention Project to Deter Cigarette Smoking and Alcohol Abuse in Monroe County, Indiana Children and Adolescents. Overall, school grants and contracts continue to improve with a total of $1,231,112 in externally acquired support.</p>

<p>The Department of Health and Safety Education focuses its undergraduate program in two areas: preparation for careers in community-based health education and preparation for certification in school health education. The department’s graduate program establishes a PhD in Health Behavior. Additionally, IU becomes the first university in the nation to offer a doctorate in Health and Safety Education.</p>

<h4>Founding of US Fitness Academy”</h4>

<p>The US Fitness Academy, under the auspices of the National Fitness Foundation and the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, is located in Indianapolis. Several HPER faculty members are involved in its founding: Physical Education Chair David Clarke, Associate Dean Wynn Updyke, and Dean Tony Mobley.</p>

<p>The School of HPER celebrates its fortieth anniversary. The number of majors enrolled during the fall semester includes 574 undergraduate and 250 graduate students. <h4>Grant Awarded to Department of Applied Health Science</h4>

<p>The Department of Applied Health Science is awarded a grant of $161,520 from the US Department of Education to train 100 Indiana elementary and secondary school teachers as a drug abuse prevention specialists, with James Crowe serving as Project Director. With additional funding received for drug abuse prevention and education, Indiana University and the Monroe County community receive more funds under the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, per capita, than any other area in the country.</p>

<p>The construction of new human performance laboratories is completed in the space formerly occupied by the Wrubel Computing Center. <h4>International partnerships continue to grow and flourish</h4>

<p>President Yang and delegates from the Beijing Institute of Physical Education visit the school and IU campus during the fall of 1990. The School of HPER and the Taiwan National College of Physical Education and Sports enter into a formal faculty exchange agreement. The School of HPER enters into a formal Agreement of Friendship and Cooperation with

Victoria University of Technology-Footscray Campus (Australia). The agreement encompasses the provisions for teaching and research personnel exchange, student exchange, and books/reference materials exchange.</p>

<h4>Mount McKinley Climb</h4>

<p>A faculty team consisting of Professors David Gallahue, Joel Stager, and Jeff Edwards attempts to climb Mount McKinley in May 1992 to study weight loss and energy expenditure in low oxygen environments, the results of which can provide insights into cardio-respiratory diseases. Although stormy weather keeps them from reaching the 20,320 foot summit and high winds, sub-zero temperatures, and deep snow further challenged the expedition, the story grips the community and represents an extraordinary moment in the school’s history.</p>

<h4>Cooperation with National Park Service</h4>

<p>The Department of Recreation and Park Administration finalizes a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service that establishes the National Center on Accessibility in January 1922, housed at Bradford Woods. Gary Robb is Director of the project and Edward Hamilton serves as Research Director.</p>

<h4>Department becomes accredited</h4>

<p>In October 1992, the Department of Recreation and Park Administration submits an application to the National Council on Accreditation for reaccreditation of its academic programs in Leisure Services Management, Natural Resources Recreation Management, and Therapeutic Recreation. The department’s accreditation status at that time is one of the oldest and longest for professional preparation in these areas. The reaccreditation on-site visit takes place in November 1993.</p>

<h4>Month-long commemoration of 13th anniversary of Surgeon General's Report</h4>

<p>The Department of Applied Health Science and the Institute for Drug Abuse Prevention hold a month-long commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health from mid-January to mid-February 1994. Lectures, symposia, forums, panel discussions, and other events commemorate this landmark event. The Honorable Joycelyn Elders, MD, Surgeon General of the United States, delivers a distinguished lecture on the Bloomington campus as part of the commemoration.</p>
