IU Athletics Kicking Off Year-Long Commemoration of Indiana University Bicentennial

Bloomington, Indiana – Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass announced today a variety of ways IU Athletics will participate in the commemoration of the Indiana University Bicentennial Year, which officially starts today.

"I am honored to be the steward of IU Athletics during the 200th anniversary of the founding of Indiana University, my alma mater," Glass said. "IU Athletics is proud to participate in the Bicentennial commemoration and will do so in a way that is worthy of our world-class university."

In recognition of IU's Bicentennial, Indiana University Athletics has a series of high-profile events and recognitions scheduled to honor the state's flagship university. In each case, IU Athletics looks to engage with IU alums and Hoosier fans around the world by chronicling, celebrating and recognizing our storied past and promising future.

Among the items that Hoosier fans can look forward to during the next 12 months are:

Bicentennial Flags and Banners –IU Athletics has created a Bicentennial flag to be flown at prominent locations around the IU Athletics campus and at home athletic venues beginning this week and continuing through the 2019-20 academic year. In addition, Bicentennial banners adorn the streetlights along 17th street between North Fee Lane and North Dunn Street.

Bicentennial Uniform Logos – All Indiana University student-athletes will wear commemorative patches on their uniforms during competitions for the 2019-20 season. This Bicentennial uniform logo (pictured above) will make its debut for the first home athletic event of the year, the IU Women's Soccer exhibition against Indiana State Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Branding - IU Athletics will celebrate the Bicentennial with prominent logo display and Bicentennial recognition on its schedule cards; schedule posters; website/social media platforms; clear bags; street flags; concessions packaging; and in-venue public address and video board announcements.

Completing the IU Athletics Bicentennial Master Plan – Consistent with the Bicentennial Strategic Plan for Indiana University, IU Athletics will complete the IU Bloomington Athletics Facilities Master Plan by the end of the Bicentennial year. These projects included the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall Renovation; the Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media and Technology; the Memorial Stadium South End Zone Excellence Academy; and Wilkinson Hall.

In addition, during the upcoming year, IU Athletics will complete its own Bicentennial projects including its new championship golf course, The Pfau Course, which will be dedicated this fall. Also this fall the brand new Indiana University Cross Country Course will open. The Terry Tallen Indiana Football Complex, which is located underneath Memorial Stadium's west stands, will also open this fall. This expansive complex includes a new team lounge, recruiting area, coaches' locker room, equipment room, the Trent and Julie Green Locker Room and the Dr. John M. Miller Training Room. Finally, next fall the major renovations to Bill Armstrong Stadium will be complete.

Bicentennial Minutes Series – During the last year, IU Athletics has worked closely with the IU Office of the Bicentennial on a series of one-minute videos of the most important and influential individuals who have been involved in intercollegiate athletics during the last 200 years. Individuals highlighted include Milt Campbell, Tara VanDerveer, Preston Eagleson and Jerry Yeagley, among others.

Bicentennial Nights – During the 2019-20 season, IU Athletics will designate one football, one men's basketball and one women's basketball home game as its official "Bicentennial" game. The IU Football team will wear a special Bicentennial Uniform for its game, while the men's and women's basketball games will feature a court projection to honor the Bicentennial.

Bicentennial Artwork with Anne Castro – IU Athletics has commissioned Anne Castro to create a commemorative piece highlighting and celebrating the most important events and influential individuals in the last 200 years of IU Athletics.

Bicentennial Tent – Throughout the 2019 IU Football season, the IU Bicentennial Committee will have a Bicentennial Tent, offering fans an opportunity to learn more about the university's first 200 years.

Bicentennial Vanguard Series – IU Athletics will highlight and expand its "Vanguard" series on IUHoosiers.com, which features a series of stories and videos highlighting the unmatched tradition of innovation among our students, coaches, staff, and department policies.

Jerry Yeagley Documentary – In partnership with adidas and Blueline Pictures, IU Athletics has commissioned a documentary about IU Soccer Coach Jerry Yeagley, one of the most important individuals in the history of Indiana University sports. Yeagley took over and turned IU's intramural soccer team into the envy of all intercollegiate soccer programs, one that has now won eight national championships.
