Maxwell Hall has served many purposes since its construction in 1890. Originally named Library Hall, the building was renamed Maxwell Hall in 1894. It features a 1650 square foot turf courtyard.
On August 11, 2017, the Indiana University Board of Trustees approved a project to renovate the courtyard to make it more beautiful and welcoming. The new masonry pattern and limestone wall match that of Maxwell Hall. Hand carved limestone seats provide seating opportunities around the edge of a bluestone paved plaza with landscaping and a water feature as focal points and new lighting.
