Pulitzer Prize winning poet and former Poet Laureate Rita Dove visited IU South Bend for two days in 2018. During her visit, she held a public forum on poetry and civil rights at the Civil Rights Heritage Center. On the second night of her visit, she delivered lecture, “How Does a Shadow Shine?” at IU South Bend’s Louise E. Addicott and Yatish J. Joshi Performance Hall. In her appearances, Dove spoke about the themes of civil rights in her poetry, the state of black literature, and the controversial issues of race and historical narratives.
