The 1970’s saw pioneering efforts to merge women’s athletics and physical education into the previously men’s-only departments. Additionally, the Department of Physical Education becomes a charter member of Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, which works toward the organization of women’s athletics.
The 1980s and 1990s are filled with commemorations, prestigious collaborations, and research. During these decades, the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation faculty members help found the U.S. Fitness Academy, and the school’s Department of Recreation and Park Administration collaborates with the National Park Service.
