New AI Supercomputer of Indiana University is the fastest in the state

The advent of emerging technologies has fostered the prominence of digital competence across the academic domain. In a recent episode, Indiana University has announced the possession of a new artificial intelligence supercomputer. Reports suggest the computer is the fastest in the state of Indiana along with being the fastest among university-owned supercomputers in the United States.

According to experts, Big Red 200 is six times faster than the previous Big Red II and almost 300 times faster and more capable than the original Big Red supercomputer from 15 years ago.

University sources further determine Big Red will support the university research in artificial intelligence, data analytics, scientific and medical research, and machine learning.

"There has been a huge growth in the use of AI in nearly every area of science in recent years," commented Fred Cate, IU vice president for research, in a university news article. "Common to many of these is the application of sophisticated machine learning techniques to massive amounts of data. Essential to this is enormous computing power specially configured to optimize these kinds of calculations. Big Red 200 will bring this nationally competitive capability to Indiana University scientists and researchers and to the state," he added.

Based on a statement by Professor Tatiana Foroud, chair of the department, he said the AI capabilities of Big Red 200 will foster the research programs in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at the IU School of Medicine. "I believe this new AI-capable supercomputer will enable breakthrough discoveries across a broad range of research areas, including neurodegeneration and the study of Alzheimer's disease," he added.

Furthermore, IU will reportedly broadcast a dedication ceremony for the new supercomputer as part of its Bicentennial celebration. The event can reportedly also be viewed live on the university's web streaming portal.
