Campus: IU Bloomington
In 2016, Indiana University Bloomington made it a priority to construct five new gateways along different edges of the campus to make it clear where the campus began and ended. “We really didn’t have our major gateways identified,” said university landscape architect Mia Williams. “It wasn’t clear to people where campus proper started and stopped….it’s about a sense of place. We’re saying, ‘Hey, you’re at Indiana University.”
IU Bloomington now features five new landmark gates:
- Dunn Street and Indiana 45/46 Bypass–This gate was built to welcome visitors from the northwest side of the city and is 61 feet high and has a 9-inch wall reading INDIANA UNIVERSITY.
- Woodlawn Avenue and Indiana 45/46 Bypass–These gates, relocated from their original home at the Chi Omega sorority house, are positioned in front of two of the newest additions to the Indiana University athletic complex: the Bart Kaufman baseball field and the Andy Mohr softball field, both dedicated in 2013. This project also included constructing a running path from the Kaufman field to the bypass.
- Third and Union Streets–This was the first of the new gates to be installed in 2012 and is located at the corner of Third and Union Street. This particular gate was specifically designed with foot traffic in mind.
- The Baier Gates–Positioned on the southwest corner of campus on the corner of Third Street and Indiana Avenue, this gate mirrors the position of the Third Street and Union gate, constructed to serve as an obvious footpath marker that students can walk through. These gates were a gracious gift from Lowell E. Baier, an Indiana University School of Law graduate in 1964.
- Indiana Avenue and Seventh Street–This gate sits on the corner of Indiana and Seventh Streets facing Dunn Meadow.
